Considerations

When tile-laying is a part of a bigger project, such as remodels or expansions, lay your tiles at the right time. Professionals have differing opinions on whether floor-related work or wall-related work should be completed first. As for us, we recommend that all cabinet installation and wall painting be completed first before laying your ceramic tiles. This prevents damaging newly-installed tiles. For bathroom projects, we recommend tiling first before any fitting for better sealing against water damage.

Another thing to consider before starting the tile-laying process is the number of materials needed. How the tiles will be laid out affects the number of ceramic tiles required. Professionals determine the amount by measuring the area and adding 15% to account for wastage. Using a tape measure, determine the area of the floor by multiplying its width by its length.

Installation Process

Step 1: Assessing the surface.

The key to a successful installation is thorough prep work. Begin the process by inspecting the surface’s condition. The substrate should be clean, stable, and sound. This may involve removing your existing flooring and installing backer boards. For tile flooring installation in the bathroom, choose a water-resistant backer board. Otherwise, plywood can be used.

Step 2: Finding the center of the surface.

With a tape measure, measure all walls to find the center. Snap a chalk line down the center lines to divide the room into roughly equal quadrants.

Step 3: Dri-fitting.

Lay the tiles out, working outward from the center point, to evaluate the layout. Use tile spacers for better alignment. There should be a gap along walls, cabinets, and other large room fittings. In this step, cutting tiles may be necessary. This requires the use of either a rail tile cutter, tile nipper, or wet tile saw.

Step 4: Laying the tiles.

When satisfied with the layout, the actual tiling can begin. Start at the center and work out to the perimeter. Spread out thinset or synthetic adhesive, working in small sections to avoid having it dry before you can tile it. Press the tiles into the thinset.

Step 5: Grouting.

Remove the tile spacers and press grout around the seams using a rubber float. Let it cure for an hour.

Step 6: Cleaning and sealing.

Remove the grout haze by wiping it off with a wet sponge dipped in a mixture of water and grout haze remover. Then apply a sealer to individual grout lines with a brush applicator.
